JAZZ CONCERT

TUESDAY FEB 3, 7:30 PM
WIEN BLEIBT KRK
GEORG BREINSCHMID AND BAND

Georg Breinschmid, Wien bleibt Krk CD cover

Austrian bassist Georg Breinschmid and Band will present an eclectic mix of melodies and genres in adaptation of their most recent release "Wien bleibt Krk" (Vienna is still Krk) - a true highlight of the season.

Georg Breinschmid studied classical bass at the University of Vienna. As a student he worked as a substitute in the big Viennese orchestras, and also played chamber music with orchestras such as the AmadeusEnsemble, Ensemble Kontrapunkte and Die Reihe. At the same time he started out as a jazz musician, cooperating for instance with the violinist Zipflo Weinrich.

Breinschmid has put together a band that includes vocalists, trumpet, piano, violins and accordion that provides moments of serious swing, cabaret pop, and beer hall avant garde. Since 2005 Georg Breinschmid has also increasingly made his mark as a composer. His devotion to Vienna and Viennese songs is clearly recognizable in his current CD "Wien bleibt Krk".

COMPOSER PORTRAITS
GEORG FRIEDRICH HAAS

FRIDAY FEB 6, 8:00 PM
ONSTAGE DISCUSSION WITH GEORG FRIEDRICH HAAS

Austrian composer Georg Friedrich Haas (b. 1953) is an experimenter with sound. His extraordinary approach to sonority creates beautiful and opalescent soundscapes as he explores micro-intervals and pure overtones in his music. In Vain, his 75-minute tour-de-force for 24 players, has never been performed in the United States. The work is played mostly in the dark; the performers play mainly from memory.
