DANIEL PABST AND TRAFO QUARTETT

Curated by Lukas Ligeti.

Daniel Pabst and TRAFO Quartett

Co-founded in 2004 by Austrian guitarist/contemporary composer Daniel Pabst, this group, which frequently uses musical themes from 70s TV series, takes full advantage of the possibilities of the electric guitar, while mostly using vintage analog equipment.

LINEUP
Daniel Pabst (electric guitar)
Chris Janka (electric guitar)
Claudius Jelinek (electric guitar)
Emmanuel Preuschl (electric guitar)

Daniel Pabst, born in 1971, studied jazz guitar and composition, worked in projects with Lukas Ligeti, Mia Zabelka, Harri Stoijka, Noel Akchoté, Martin Philadelphy, Sylvie Lacroix, John Peterson, Gerald Preinfalk, Karl Ritter, Martin Siewert, Didier Hampl, Christoph Dienz, and others. He composed the opera "der automatische teufel" which premiered in 2000 at the Dietheater Künstlerhaus in Vienna

Chris Janka was guitarist of "Blendwerk", a band very much influenced by the music of the "Talking Heads", "Sonic Youth" and "Ideal". Along with the other bandmembers of "Blendwerk", Katrin Plavcak, Roman Harrer and Kontext-drummer Rudi Fischerlehner, Janka played an inventive Independent-Rock, which was constantly wrestling with Jazz, electronic music and the "neue deutsche Welle". Chris Janka, sound-magician and electro-acoustic genius, also does visual art performances and installations. "Trafo" benefits from his various talents and his experience of playing with groups like "Roh", "Beiwagen" and "Blendwerk".

Claudius Jelinek has been known in the Austrian music scene for over thirty years, working as a guitarist, bassist, composer and teacher. Recently he has been beating "la pompe" as the second guitarist in Harri Stojka's various gypsy jazz formations, as he did on the very successful album "A Tribute to Swing", where his fast and excellent technique can be heard. Jelinek is a versatile guitarist and not only familiar with gypsy swing, which he likes to demonstrate at every "Trafo-Show".

Emanuel Preuschl has played with the "Progressive Metal" Band "Adrenochrom", which had very good reviews in the "Metal Hammer"-magazine. They remind you of "KoRn" and "Sepultura", but always stick to their own sound. Emanuel was introduced to Jazz by his older brother, the bassist Raphael Preuschl, who is member of the Viennese collective JazzWerkstatt.

Lukas Ligeti is the son of the famous composer György Ligeti, and lives and works in New York. As a percussionist, he has played and/or recorded with artists such as Henry Kaiser, Raoul Björkenheim, Michael Manring, Gianni Gebbia, Daniel Carter, Benoît Delbecq, John Tchicai, Pyrolator Kurt Dahlke, Elliott Sharp, Jim O'Rourke, Robert Dick, Fred Frith, Chris Cutler, Rupert Huber, Ned Rothenberg, etc., and performs solo concerts on electronic percussion. Since 2003, he has curated the weekly experimental music series "Freezone NY" with guitarist Ty Cumbie.
