EAF09: 2009 EMERGING ARTIST FELLOWSHIP EXHIBITION
SEPTEMBER 13, 2009 - MARCH 7, 2010
OPENING: SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 2009 / 2-6PM
RAIN OR SHINE

ARTISTS:
David Brooks, Pilar Conde, Zack Davis, Christian de Vietri, Aaron King, Zak Kitnick, Lynn Koble, Tamara Kostianovsky, Mads Lynnerup, Wyatt Nash, Navin June Norling, Andréa Stanislav, Brina Thurston, Kon Trubkovich, Lan Tuazon, and Erik & Ninh Vysocan.

Join us at Socrates Sculpture Park on Sunday, September 13, 2009 (2-6pm) for the opening of EAF09: 2009 Emerging Artist Fellowship Exhibition, featuring new works by the Park's current resident artists.

Each year, EAF artists are awarded a grant and a residency in the Park's outdoor studio and are also provided with technical support and access to tools, materials and equipment to facilitate the production of new sculptures and installations for exhibition in the Park.  The artists develop their projects throughout the summer in the open studio and on site in the landscape, offering visitors the opportunity to experience both the creation and presentation of their works.  Representing a broad range of materials, working methods and subject matter, the diverse sculptural works in this exhibition are presented against the Park's spectacular waterfront view of the Manhattan skyline.  Read more about the EAF Program....

OPENING DAY PERFORMANCES:

Navin June Norling will enact the performative aspect of his installation, "As you sow so shall you reap".  Over the next few days, Norling will "white-out" his sculpture by applying white paint across the surface of his work, obscuring the image of the hanging tree depicted on the found window, wood and acrylic sculpture.  During the opening on Sunday, September 13, he will scrape, wash and clean the windows to allow the underlying image to re-emerge transformed.  He explores the notion of change by highlighting his own role in the process: performing the alteration of the physical visual form thereby initiating accompanying changes in memory, insight and perspectives. 3-4pm

Set within
Andréa Stanislav's installation, titled "Ghost Siege", dancer/choreographer Leah Schrager will dance to music composed by Kenny Aronoff, preminent drummer and percussionist.  Performances will take place at 3pm, 4pm and 5pm (Approximate running time: 10min)

Riot City Souvenir Stand, a reference to souvenir stands near major tourist attractions, is a presentation and sale of limited edition reproductions of notable New York City buildings by Lan Tuazon.   Onlookers and consumers alike will get a tour of her sculpture "Riot City" and learn about its urban planning features.  This performance will continue throughout the opening reception, from 2-6pm.

See below for additional exhibitions and events taking place in Long Island City on Sunday, September 13.

ABOUT SOCRATES SCULPTURE PARK:
Socrates Sculpture Park was an abandoned riverside landfill and illegal dumpsite until 1986 when a coalition of artists and community members, under the leadership of sculptor Mark di Suvero, transformed it into an open studio and exhibition space for artists and a neighborhood park for local residents.  Today, it is an internationally renowned outdoor museum and artist residency program that also serves as a vital New York City park offering a wide variety of free public programs. The Park's existence is based on the belief that reclamation, revitalization and creative expression are essential to the survival, humanity and improvement of our urban environment.
