Museum of Chinese in America Grand Opening Celebration 

 

During opening week, MOCA welcomed several thousand visitors and guests. With a Single Step: Stories in the Making of America, MOCA's new core exhibit presents the diverse layers of the Chinese American experience while examining America's journey as a nation of immigrants—from an historical overview of Chinese immigration to the United States, to the individual stories that reveal what it has meant to be Chinese in America at different moments in time, to the physical traces and images left behind by past generations for us to consider, reflect and reclaim. Here & Now is MOCA's first group show of contemporary artiHere and Now eCard.jpgsts, and features prominent Chinese artists who live and work in New York. Chapter I: Visual Memories with works by Xu Bing, Cui Fei, Yun-Fei Ji and Lin Yan is on view until November 2, 2009. View more>>

 

Chinatown Film Project: How Do You See Chinatown?

The Chinatown Film Project (CFP), MOCA's inaugural film exhibition features ten original short films by ten of New York's most exciting filmmakers.

The CFP tackles Chinatown's elusiveness and its stereotyped representations by constructing new images for the viewer.View more>>

Apple Store, 103 Prince Street, New York City

 

Join curator/producer Karin Chien and award-winning filmmaker Richard Wong for a screening and behind-the-scenes look at the Chinatown Film Project. Ten acclaimed New York filmmakers were given the same budget and access to construct new visions of Chinatown. Rich Wong will discuss his musical "Lonely Alone" and his collaboration with Wayne Wang on "Tuesday."

This event is free and open to the public.

Film Screening: A Brief Flight...Hazel Ying Lee and the Women who Flew Pursuit

A Brief Flight, directed by Alan Rosenberg, is a new, one-hour documentary that tells the inspiring true story of Hazel Ying Lee, Chinese-American aviator of the 1930's and 40's. A pioneer in women's aviation in both the United States and China, Hazel went on to become one pilot among an elite group of women who flew fighter planes for the United States Army. View more>> 

 

Screening followed by Q&A with Frances Tong, Hazel Ying Lee's sister.

Here & Now Discussion Series:

Chinese Artists in New York and Chinese Artists in China

Saturday, October 24, 3 pm

 

Zhijian Qian, curator of Here & Now moderates a discussion with Lin Yan and Cui Fei, artists of the exhibit's first chapter: Visual Memories, and Richard Vine, senior editor of Art in America on the changing scene of contemporary art in China and its impact on Chinese artists outside China.

This program is held in conjunction with the special exhibition, Here and Now: Chinese Artists in New York.

Fee (includes museum admission): $15; $10 student and senior; free for members

Open Mic: Things that Haunt You

Join us for a special Halloween themed open mic night. Share your scary experiences; tell us the things that haunt you...

Hosted by Taiyo Na & Featuring Henry Chang and Ed Lin.   

This is a poetry/spoken word/storytelling event. Yes, you can also sing.

There is a 5 minute time limit on all performances.
All participants are welcome, invite your friends! Please register in advance to save a slot as this event will be on a first come, first serve basis. If you arrive without registering, there is no guarantee you will be able to perform.

Mid-Autumn Festival Mooncake Tasting

 

Saturday, October 4, 11:45 am


Join MOCA to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival and to sample one of the most popular and delicious Chinese pastries: the mooncake! Traditional mooncakes are prepared with thick lotus seed paste and can include different fillings. Cakes are also symbols for family, unity, prosperity, and a sweet life. Today's mooncakes come in many different forms and MOCA will be sampling them to see which one is the favorite as we celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival!

 

Free with Museum admission. Limited quantity. First come, first served.

Projecting Our Voices: 7 Short Films from MOCA's Youth Advisory Board

Saturday, October 17, 6:30 pm

This screening will feature short films created by a group of NYC students who explored moments of conflict and their definitions of "Chinatown" & "Chinese American." Featuring the work of:Thalia Bloom, Eric Cheng, Alison Cheu, Katrina Lee, Angeline Lim, Jessica Tan, and Thomas Weng.  Facilitators: Dylan Yeats and Iki Nakagawa.
