ItaliaArabia
Curated by Sam Bardaouil and Till Fellrath

December 10, 2008 - February 7, 2009

ItaliaArabia juxtaposes 80 works by mid 20th century Italian painters with paintings by Lebanese, Egyptian, Syrian and Iranian artists revealing the co-impact that one culture has had on the other. These pieces not only enrich the respective cultural traditions from which they stem, but, by bridging the cultural divide, also remind us of art's ability to foster peaceful co-existence.

Born in 1926, Jean Miotte began exhibiting in 1952 and continues to this day. As one of the important protagonists of Art Informel, his work is inspired by the desire of the postwar generation to create a universal human language in art, a path to peace after the horrors of war.
Miotte's seminal influences include Jazz but especially dance.

The Miotte Foundation, housed in the Chelsea Art Museum, preserves the oeuvre of Jean Miotte and fosters research into the Informel movement.

ItaliaArabia Forum
The exhibition ItaliaArabia arises out of the life-long commitment of Chelsea Art Museum's founders to foster cross-cultural dialogue. It is the Museum's mission to enforce a fundamental belief in human rights and to cultivate respect for the world at large. In this spirit, CAM is delighted to present the following public programs, designed to complement ItaliaArabia.

Film January 22, 2009 at 6:30 pm
A screening of Waiting for Pasolini, directed by Daoud Aoulad-Syad (2007) will be followed by a brief discussion on the themes relating to the film/exhibition. This distinctly Moroccan comedy set in Ouarzazate, the town used by countless American and European film productions, reveals how the village is turned upside down when it is announced that an Italian film crew will be arriving to shoot. Selected Best Arabic Film at the 2007 Cairo International Film Festival.

Theater January 29, 2009 at 6:30 pm
A reading of selected scenes from "Betrayed," directed by Pippin Parker. In early 2007, George Packer published an article in The New Yorker about Iraqi interpreters who jeopardized their lives on behalf of the Americans in Iraq, with little or no U.S. protection or security. The article drew national attention to the humanitarian crisis and moral scandal. Betrayed, based on Mr. Packer's interviews in Baghdad, tells the story of three young Iraqis - two men and one woman - motivated to risk everything by America's promise of freedom. Betrayed explores the complex relationships among the Iraqis themselves, and with their American supervisor, struggling to find purpose while a country collapses around them.

Children's Workshop Saturday January 31, 2009
CAM KIDS, Chelsea Art Museum's children's education program, offers a workshop for families with children between the ages of 5 and 7, designed to facilitate their exploration of the role of artistic exchange between Middle Eastern and Western artists in a polarized political climate. Music February 7, 2009 at 6:00 pm
An improvisational lyrical dialogue between Ilham, and Ensemble Π, followed by a discussion of the cross-influences of Middle Eastern and European music. Ilham, which is Arabic for "inspiration," is a collaborative quartet that relies on the inspiration of the moment and the interplay of three different traditions to create new music with deep roots. Ensemble Π  is a new music ensemble seeking to be actively involved in the current political situation in the world and has a commitment to the world's peace.
