THE AUSTRIAN CULTURAL FORUM NEW YORK, THE ARGENTO NEW MUSIC PROJECT, AND THE MUSIC INFORMATION CENTER AUSTRIA PRESENT
SUNDAY SEP 13, 11:00 AM - 04:00 PM MONDAY SEP 14, 04:00 PM - 05:30 PM MOVING SOUNDS SYMPOSIUM
The artistic program of the Moving Sounds Festival revolves around "sound" as a compositional material. In the accompanying symposia, the participating composers, artists, and curators will engage in a dialog with theorists/practitioners from American universities, discussing the phenomenon of "sound" within the context of the presented works. Theodor W. Adorno's analysis of the "culture-industry" and its significance for the aesthetics of music in the 21st century provides the framework. The discussions and dialogs will revolve mainly around topics such as the artistic practice of "written" vs. "produced" music, the aesthetic requirements of electronic vs. acoustic modes of practice, and the effects of the respective "value-added chains" on production, perception, and reception. Instead of giving us new sounds, the nineteenth-century composers have given us endless arrangements of the old sounds. We have turned on the radios and always known when we were tuned to a symphony. The sound has always been the same, and there has not been the hint of curiosity as to the possibilities of rhythm. For interesting rhythms we have listened to jazz. - John Cage, 1939
What does this mean and how do we relate to this exactly 70 years later?
