JULY 15
LAOS / THAILAND
PRE-SCREENING PERFORMANCE:
The Thai Cultural Center of New York presents...
Klong Sabut Chai - Drum Call: A ceremonial performance from Northern
Thailand used in ancient times as a war cry before battle - calling upon
the spirits for courage, perseverance and luck. As time and tradition
evolved the ceremony has been adapted to be used before a grand-opening
or at the beginning of a festival.
Rum Tien - The Candle Dance: a ceremonial performance to bless
event-goers with life and happiness. Light shining from the candles is
elegantly maneuvered with a soft and gentle hand spreading luck as far
as the light reaches.
Bang Rajan re-enactment: The famous story of Bang Rajan is used to show
off demonstrations of ancient Thai weaponry and fighting techniques.
These techniques include sword-fighting, and Muay Thai, which has
evolved into a thriving and popular martial arts sport.

great cinematographer Ellen Kuras (director of The Betrayal). (Rated
PG-13 for language)
AUGUST 5

2008, 90 mins. Directed by Ari Folman.
Dreamlike and personal, this unique and affecting animated feature (by

uses animation as a window into the subconscious. (Rated R for violence,
nudity and sexual content)
AUGUST 12

ABOUT SOCRATES SCULPTURE PARK:
Socrates Sculpture Park was an abandoned riverside landfill and illegal
dumpsite until 1986 when a coalition of artists and community members,
under the leadership of sculptor Mark di Suvero, transformed it into an
open studio and exhibition space for artists and a neighborhood park for
local residents. Today, it is an internationally renowned outdoor
museum and artist residency program that also serves as a vital New York
City park offering a wide variety of free public programs. The Park's
existence is based on the belief that reclamation, revitalization and
creative expression are essential to the survival, humanity and
improvement of our urban environment.
