Once associated with the likes of Bordeaux and Bavaria, fine wines are now a growing presence in Asia from Bombay to Beijing. Apart from importing alcoholic beverages in frenzy, Asian vineyards have also emerged to produce respectable wines— in places such as India, Thailand, Vietnam and China. Here in America, many restaurateurs have taken the cue to reinvent their menus through pairing their fine cuisines with refreshing innovative drinks, imported Asian beers and wines with outstanding results.

Promoting greater regional economic integration and sustainable development as part of a response to global economic challenges dominated the agenda of the annual APEC Summit, hosted this year by President Alan Garcia of Peru from November 20-23 in Lima. The APEC Business Advisory Council representatives met with global leaders, and President Garcia hosted a business summit in parallel to the official talks. The Asia Society will join the U.S. National Center for APEC in hosting a post-APEC briefing to review the issues discussed at the Lima Summit and what they will mean for the region's future. The program will also provide an opportunity to explore how these issues and outcomes will be forwarded by Singapore, APEC host for 2009. U.S. Senior Official for APEC, Ambassador Patricia M. Haslach, and Assistant USTR Wendy Cutler will anchor this annual program.
