KRISTEENYOUNG
KRISTEENYOUNG is a piano/keyboard and drums "rock" duo, in the golden years sense of the word, when rock was simultaneously adventurous, original, scary and fun. Think saw-toothed riffs reminiscent of JIMMY PAGE and tub-thumping, bootknocking drums born of the same era and you're halfway there. On top of that, there's the otherworldly vocals and lyrics that you have to hear to believe. The pair is made up of singer, writer, pianist/keyboardist, Kristeen Young and drummer "Baby" Jeff White.
KRISTEENYOUNG homepage

CRUEL BLACK DOVE
"... a buzz-worthy female-fronted electronic rock outfit who set the stage on fire with their blend of passionate, hard hitting Lynch-esque music. Comparisons to PJ Harvey, Curve, and Depeche Mode aren't inappropriate, but Cruel Black Dove is still a force of their own, full to the brim with infectious sound and fury. Slinking back and forth in perfect rhythm, adding to the mood with ominous red lighting, fuzzed out bass, and a knack for on-stage exorcism, part Nick Cave, part Patti Smith, and all unpredictable ferocity. I was floored." (LIMEWIRE)
Cruel Black Dove homepage

MONOKINO
Monokino brings together the artistic visions of 3 musicians from different worlds: George van Wetering (Holland) song writer, lead vocals, guitar; Yu Jin (formerly of Cobra, first all-women rock band in Beijing, now living in Germany) on keyboard and synthesizer, and electronic drummer Frans van Gastel (Holland), who joined the band in 2007. Monokino has to date released one EP and one album in China where the band is known for its distinct musical identity playing electronic pop music. The sound has been spiced up in a rather kitschy way with a combination of melodious high pitched vocals, static keyboard, rock guitar and electronic/acoustic drum segments. In Holland, China and Germany, Monokino has received both critical and public acclaim for its indie music. Monokino is signed to Modern Sky, China's largest independent record label.

Endless Boogie

with Children, Chin Chin

ENDLESS BOOGIE
The name should tell you everything. Fronted by recorded rarities dealer Top Dollar, the group's modus operandi is to sink their teeth into an old school blues-rock groove and never let go until they're forcibly ejected from the venue. Hammond organs and dueling guitars are the signatures of their sound, as well as extended blues improvisation and wire tight chops.
Endless Boogie homepage

CHILDREN
Children are taking that good old thrash metal aesthetic and updating it with their incredibly precise and driving riff-construction. These guys aren't overly nostalgic for the beginnings of metal, nor are they bogged down in superficial theatrics. It's just straight ahead brutality with a touch of groove.

Fwd: INVITATION | RECOMMENDATION | CONCERTS | Klangforum Wien

THE

AUSTRIAN CULTURAL FORUM NEW YORK

PRESENTS

CONCERTS | ACFNY RESIDENCY

MONDAY APR 6, 7:30 PM
TUESDAY APR 7, 7:30 PM

KLANGFORUM WIEN

Klangforum Wien, photo by Claudia Prieler

This arguably most important chamber ensemble from Austria is performing a wide repertoire of cutting edge compositions within the framework of an ACFNY art/concert residency on April 6th and 7th, immediately following their innovative music and film program at Lincoln Center's recently re-opened Alice Tully Hall on April 4th 2009 (see ACF-recommendation below).

KLANGFORUM WIEN was founded in 1985 by Beat Furrer as an ensemble of soloists committed to the performance of contemporary music, with a democratic philosophy, where co-operation between performers, conductors and composers is both encouraged and nurtured and replaces the more traditional, hierarchical structure found in much musical practice. KLANGFORUM WIEN performs worldwide with over 80 performances each season, with focal points in the important European music centers as well as in the USA and Japan. Another mainstay of the ensemble's work is their annual programmmatically ambitious series of concerts at the Vienna Konzerthaus.

The program and residency at the ACFNY is curated by Sven Hartberger.

ACF RECOMMENDS

CONCERT

SATURDAY APR 4, 8:00 PM
KLANGFORUM WIEN
NEW MUSIC FOR A NEW HALL - free radicals

Free Radicals, an innovative music and film program by the acclaimed Austrian contemporary music ensemble Klangforum Wien, will have its U.S. premiere at Alice Tully Hall, led by guest conductor, Jean Deroyer. The project, the result of a collaboration between the ensemble and noted contemporary film artists and composers, had its world premiere at the 2007 Venice Biennale. Free Radicals is an aural and visual immersion pairing short films by experimental filmmakers from the 1920s to the present with music by composers from the same eras. The program reveals new rhythms, dramatic possibilities, and relationships between sound and image.

Program concept by Bernhard Zachhuber and Bady Minck.
Music by Aperghis, Feldman, Schoenberg, Furrer, Mochizuki, and others.
Films by Man Ray, Bady Minck, Maya Deren, Tim MacMillan, Pipilotti Rist, and others.
A project of Klangforum Wien in cooperation with Amour Fou Filmproduktion.
