| Please join us for a wine and cheese reception! On Tuesday, May 25, 6pm, at Solar One, 23rd Street and the East River, we'll unveil our new and beautifully designed educational panels, with Council Member Dan Garodnick as our keynote speaker. We hope you can be a part of our celebration! This fun, festive, and free event will give you a chance to meet new and old friends, get a good gander at our handsome new panels, and watch the sunset on the East River while sipping your vino. But wait....panels. What the heck is that all about? How many of the 55,000 annual visitors to Stuyvesant Cove Park know that it's an all-native species park, an official Monarch Butterfly waystation, a place where you can watch Double-crested Cormorants dive for food in the East River, a body of water as rich in wildlife as the Great Coral Reef? And as they look out on the unobstructed views of the East River, which Melville wrote about in Moby Dick, how many know they can see the Smallpox Hospital on Roosevelt Island built in 1856, or Williamsburg, Brooklyn, where Dutch, Scandinavian, and French farmers began working the land in the late 1600s? Not many we suspect. Solar One, through the generous support of the J.C. Kellogg Foundation, has created lively orientation and interpretative panels that will unlock the many secrets of our beloved Sty Cove Park. A pet project of Solar One's former Park Manager, Melissa McDonald, these stainless steel panels took nearly a year to develop and manufacture, can be cleaned with a soy-based graffiti remover and are even bullet proof (don't get any ideas). Thank you for all your support in the past. We're well aware that without you, we could not do our work. And please come to our unveiling, where I can brag about our wonderful new educational tool, and how they'll help to make a visit to Stuyvestant Cove Park a transformative experience.
