Rioja Restaurant Week Is Here!

RIOJA RESTAURANT WEEK IS HERE
Rioja Restaurant Week has begun and is in full effect. If you live in New York City, take advantage of the wonderful offers to visit some of the best restaurants featuring some of the greatest wines in the world. By now, you might have even been to a couple of restaurants, so why not go to some more? For a $25 or $50 prix fix menu that includes a glass of Rioja or 20% off a bottle of Rioja, you can't afford not to keep going.

Make sure you visit Rioja Restaurant Week for a list of participating restaurants, download and print the Rioja Dining Guide or check out this Interactive Map of all the restaurants!

To help you on your quest, check out some basic food and Rioja wine pairings below:

Rioja Blanco
Flavors – Clean and citrusy with aromas of fresh stone fruit (peach, apricot) and pears

Pairing – Great pre-meal aperitif on its own or pair with green salad, shrimp cocktail or shellfish

Barrel Fermented White Rioja
Flavors – Aromas of vanilla, coconut, tropical fruit and honey. A rich mouth-feel, almost creamy, good pineapple-like acidity, and a dry finish

Pairing – Great Chardonnay substitute, recommended with richer fish (salmon, tuna), shellfish and things that actually have fruit in them (mango salsa for example), and of course, dessert

Rioja Rosado
Flavors – Exuberant aromas of red berry fruit – think cherry and strawberry – with a dry finish

Pairing – Perfect for quenching your thirst on a hot day (or for conjuring summer on cold days). With very few exceptions, Rosados are not meant to age – so look for a bottle with the most recent vintage

Rioja Tinto Joven
Flavors – The fruitiest red made in Rioja. Very summery aromas: strawberries and cherries

Pairing – Pair with beef or turkey

Rioja Tinto Crianza
Flavors – Big aromas of strawberries, cherries, with varying degrees of toasty/vanilla flavors and aromas (from the oak) – generally fruity and clean on the palate

Pairing – Rioja's everyday wine. Perfect with whole roasted fish, beef and pasta

Rioja Tinto Reserva
Flavors – Modern styles of Reserva tend to have flavor profiles towards chocolate, sweet spices, and what Spaniards call sabores balsámicos – fennel, anise, licorice. Classic styles of Reserva tend to have more developed, earthier aromas with less noticeable fresh fruit, but more complexity and finesse

Pairing – Great with lamb, risotto, pork, ratatouille, etc… in other words, a wine to bring to a dinner party!

Rioja Tinto Gran Reserva
Flavors – A seductive and complex blend of subtle spice and soft fruit: blackberries, dried cherries and cinnamon overlain with flavors such as cigar box, leather, truffles, and faded flowers

Pairing – A special occasion wine. Excellent with fall and winter stews, sautéed mushrooms and game (duck, venison, pheasant, etc…)

Now you're ready to tackle the next restaurant on the list. Salud!

Thomas Larcher (*1963 Innsbruck, Austria) was already well known as a pianist in the area of classical, primarily contemporary music, during his studies. In this capacity, he played with important orchestras and conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Pierre Boulez, Dennis Russell Davies and Franz Welser-Möst. His love of new music led him to found and manage the Klangspuren Festival (1994-2003) and the Musik im Riesen Festival (since 2004).

In the last few years Thomas Larcher has begun to place more emphasis on his role as a composer. Works have thus been composed for the London Sinfonietta, the Artemis Quartet, Heinrich Schiff, Matthias Goerne and Till Fellner, as well as works commissioned for, among others, the Lucerne Festival, the South Bank Centre in London, and the Zaterdagsmatineen (Saturday matinees) in Amsterdam.

Larcher's works appear on Schott Music. He records exclusively for ECM Records. His CD productions have been awarded numerous prizes (Choc de la musique, Deutscher Schallplattenpreis, etc.).

A neo jazz - Brazilian - Latin experience.

Patrizia FERRARA's voice and music is often described as soothing and intimate. Her music is inspirational, hearty, and warm. It is firmly rooted in Nu-Jazz, R&B, and Acoustic Brazilian Rhythms and performed in English, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish, with two nylon string guitars and percussion. Since she moved to New York in 2005, Patrizia has been part of various singer/songwriter showcases and performed with her group at the Blue Note late night groove series, 55 Bar, Zinc Bar, Smoke, Sweet Rhythm, and at the Austrian Cultural Forum.

WALTER FISCHBACHER AND BAND PHISHBACHER

Nathan Peck, Walter Fischbacher, Yutaka Uchida

Walter FISCHBACHER (keyboard/piano)
Dan Brantigan (trumpet)
Nathan Peck (bass)
Yutaka Uchida (drums)

Special guests:
Patrizia FERRARA (vocals)
Elisabeth Lohninger (vocals)

Throughout the years, Phishbacher has featured extraordinary staples of both the US and European music scene. The band's latest line-up features Nathan Peck on bass and Yutaka Uchida on drums, two of the finest groovers and shakers on the US side of the Atlantic. The flavor of this outfit is distinctly funky, with Mr. Uchida providing an impossibly tight back beat to Mr. Peck's thumping bass lines. Walter Fischbacher draws from a vast musical background encompassing not only classical piano repertoire but also the music of jazz piano greats such as Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea. Merging distinct flavors from different corners of the world, this 2009 version of Phishbacher brings 70s Funk into the 21st Century.

The show at the Austrian Cultural Forum in New York on April 29th will be the official US CD release concert of Phishbacher's latest album "Prove That!" featuring Dan Brantigan on trumpet, as well a guest singers Elisabeth Lohninger and Patrizia FERRARA.

These concerts take place within the framework of the ACF's ongoing OPEN SPACE UNCURATED 09 | CREATIVE MIGRATION project, which represents a survey of the emerging Austrian Art scene in the US. For one month, 14 Austrian artists chosen by a jury are making use of the ACF's galleries and theater, with projects ranging from such diverse areas as visual arts, performance, music and academic research.
